WElcome to Grade 8 Design!
This year in Design students will continue to investigate real life challenges.
They will plan, research, design, and create possible solutions. They will then evaluate the effectiveness of their work against
the constraints identified early within the design cycle. They will also learn about different careers in design!
Each of our units of inquiry will focus on different aspects of design:
Giving Back
Focus: Service Learning - Advertising
Students will be working with the Chateauguay Food Bank to create advertisements for the annual food drive. Getting the word out about this important event has been a challenge in the past. Students will meet with a member of the Food Bank executive to find out about the needs of the organization. They will explore effective advertising and then create their own with the use of various computer programs.
School Beautification
Focus: Identifying issues and possible solutions – Graphic/ Interior design
Students will be identifying issues within our school environment that they feel could be addressed using graphic design and aesthetic changes. Students will need to conduct surveys, plan multiple possible solutions, and make proposals to school staff before
implementing their projects. Projects could include, but are not limited to: murals, art displays, motivational quotes, etc.
Monster Makers
Focus: Sewing and embroidery – working with textiles, 2D to 3D translation
Building off of 2D drawings created by elementary cycle 1 learners, students will apply sewing and embroidery skills learned in
class to bring the drawings to life as a 3D stuffed animal / monster complete with their own custom packaging!
The Monsters will be returned to the elementary learners as a holiday surprise.
Students will be evaluated on four criteria laid out by the IB Middle Years Programme:
Criterion A: Inquiring and analysing
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
Criterion D: Evaluating
Each unit will provide opportunities for students to work both individually and collaboratively.
The Monster Maker unit will be done in conjunction with one of the elementary schools within walking distance of HSB,
and the Giving Back unit will be in conjunction with the Chateauguay Food Bank. This provides students the chance to really tailor
their designs to a specific population while also giving them an opportunity for real life testing.
