Welcome to grade 9 Design!
This year in Design students will continue to investigate real life challenges.
They will plan, research, design, and create possible solutions. They will then evaluate the effectiveness of their work
against the constraints identified early within the design cycle. They will also learn about different careers in design!
Each of our units of inquiry will focus on a different aspect of design:
Marking memories with Monuments
Focus: Drawing and building to scale
Students will be creating model monuments to commemorate the sacrifices and successes of the Canadian Armed Forces over the past 150 years. The model monuments will be displayed during our Remembrance Day celebrations and especially during the Annual Veterans luncheon.
Playing to Learn – In Collaboration with St. Willibrod School
Focus: Creating for a specific audience
Creating games to help elementary learners conquer difficult skills or learn important concepts.
Playing for change – [Interdisciplinary Unit with Art]
Focus: Using and manipulating materials
Students will be creating musical instruments out of found and recycled materials inspired by
the traditional instruments of a country they have been studying.
Community Project
More information will be provided as the year progresses but students in the grade 9 program will be helping
to run the 4th Annual May the Fourth Be With You Walk-A-Thon in the Spring of 2020.
Their goal will be to create interactive, and informative, stations that will help engage and inform
participants about a range of issues facing countries around the world.
Students will be evaluated on four criteria laid out by the IB Middle Years Programme:
Criterion A: Inquiring and analysing
Criterion B: Developing ideas
Criterion C: Creating the solution
Criterion D: Evaluating
Each unit will provide opportunities for students to work both individually and collaboratively.
The playing to learn unit will be done in conjunction with one of the elementary schools within walking distance of HSB in order to provide
students the chance to really tailor their designs to a specific population while also giving them an opportunity for real life testing.
