Term 2
WHo's Got the Power? |
After watching the video, check out the Power Point which features some of the people who have a lot of "power" and influence in our modern day society.
Open Handout A and read the first page. On a piece of paper or in a Word doc, brainstorm "What is Power?", "Who has power?" and "Who SHOULD have power?" For those who missed the intro to this unit, we are looking at the work of Kehinde Wiley who has been chosen by Barack Obama to paint his official presidential portrait. He is a contemporary artist who is interested in exploring the ideas of power and race in his work. Please begin by watching the video about his work ( top left ). |
Select one person who you think should be more recognized for the good they do in the world. Your person should be someone who is not necessarily well known and may even be someone from your own community! The person may be alive or dead.
If they could appear on the cover of a major magazine they are already too powerful!
*** Side note: Having power does not negate their worthiness, lots of powerful people do good things; however, the point of this assignment
is to place people who deserve more power and recognition, but who are not always accorded it, to be placed in that spotlight.
After you have chosen your subject, continue on through package A

FEBRUARY 1st
Today we shifted gears to testing some creative techniques for pattern making.
( Remember all those cool patterns in Wiley's paintings? )
Use yourself or someone close to you as the topic for your a trial pattern.
Watch the video about making repeating patterns posted above.
1 - Use a 4"x4" piece of paper and draw 5 simple symbols - make sure not to touch the sides of the paper!
2 - Cut and tape using either options shown in the video ( straight or offset ).
3 - Add a few more symbols in the white areas once your tile is taped back together.
4 - You are now ready to trace!
5 - Using a regular sheet of paper, trace your tile 4x making sure to align it properly.
6 - Use the remaining space to write a few notes about the process - things to remember for when you create
the tile for your final project background!
Please complete this exercise and your research questions for next class.
